FAQS about Laser Tattoo Removal

Find out how laser tattoo removal works and whether it’s right for you.

You thought you’d never part with your tattoo—however, now it no longer fits your aesthetic or lifestyle and you want it gone. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Keshea Stevenson, your dermatologist in Rancho Cucamonga and Glendora, CA, is here to help! Here are some of the top questions regarding the laser tattoo removal process:

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Contrary to what people might think, the laser does not burn away the tattoo. This sophisticated system directs specific light energy over the skin, which then absorbs the light energy, forcing the ink to break apart. Over time, the body will flush out the fragmented ink, causing the tattoo to fade over time.

Several sessions are required in order to break up more and more of the ink until it is no longer visible.

How many sessions will I undergo?

It’s not always possible for our skin doctor to determine the exact amount of laser removal sessions that you will need to undergo; however, during your assessment, we can make an approximation of how many treatments you may need.

Most patients will need anywhere from 5 to 8 treatment sessions, although some may see results in only 3 sessions while others may require more than 10. Laser treatments are usually spaced six-weeks apart, which allows the body enough time to flush out the destroyed ink.

Patience is key, as it can take up to one year for the tattoo to be completely eliminated. Therefore, if you want to have your tattoo removed before a certain date or time, this is something to discuss with our dermatologist during your consultation.

How long does each laser treatment take?

The length of the session will depend on the size of the tattoo. Small and medium tattoos can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes while larger tattoos can take 20 minutes to an hour.

Does it hurt?

There is some discomfort associated with laser tattoo removal; however, many people say it hurts less than they expected, equating the sensation with a rubber band being snapped against the skin. To help reduce any negative feeling, we can also apply a numbing gel to the area to minimize discomfort.
