IPL and Light Therapies

Whether you want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, treat chronic skin conditions, or clear that stubborn acne, IPL and light therapies can help. Here at Foothill Cosmetic Surgery Center in Glendora, CA, your dermatology physician assistants, Keshea Stevenson and America Quintana, help their patients look their best with a variety of light treatments.

Blue and Red Light Therapy

Blue or red light therapy offers a simple way to treat many skin issues, including discoloration, fine lines/wrinkles, inflammation, large pores, rosacea, eczema, precancerous lesions, some types of skin cancers, sun damage, vitiligo, and other conditions.

Blue light therapy can be particularly helpful if you have stubborn acne. The treatment kills bacteria in your pores and reduces the production of sebum, the natural oil that clogs pores and causes pimples. Before your treatment begins, your Glendora physician assistant may apply a topical medication that makes your skin more sensitive to the effects of the light waves.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

IPL therapy uses multiple wavelengths of pulsed light to improve the texture and tone of your skin and treat redness and discolorations. The light produces heat that breaks up visible blood vessels or pigments that cause redness or discoloration. IPL therapy targets the deeper layers of the skin where these problems originate but doesn't harm shallow layers.

The therapy may be a good choice for you if you have rosacea, varicose veins, age spots, freckles, sun damage, broken blood vessels, or birthmarks. IPL can also be used to remove unwanted hair, improve skin tone, and minimize the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

PDT combines light treatment with a medication called Levulan that's absorbed by the damaged cells in the skin. Levulan increases light sensitivity, allowing the light rays to destroy targeted cells without damaging nearby skin. PDT may be used to minimize large pores, fine lines/wrinkles, decrease redness, and treat stubborn acne.

The therapy is also used to treat actinic keratoses, which are scaly, precancerous lesions that form due to sun exposure. PDT not only destroys the lesion, but also penetrates deep into the skin to target damaged cells that aren't yet visible.
